The world is currently facing a number of social challenges. And we are struggling to distribute limited resources fairly amongst ever increasing numbers of people. We are seeing growing public resentment at the perceived disconnect between the benefit for a few and the rights of the many. People are demanding more collaborative, sustainable and inclusive ways of value creation with increased transparency and accountability.
Most stakeholders, from funding organizations like the IFC through to watchdog community-based NGOs, expect companies to demonstrate compliance to various standards and guidelines. Stakeholder Engagement standards like the AA 1000, as well as social based guidelines like ISO 26000 on Social Responsibility, are two such examples.
These standards and guidelines stipulate that business leadership from board level down is accountable for the management of relevant social issues and the impact of their activities on society, particularly the host communities directly affected by current and future operations.
Track and manage KPIs
Business leadership Key Performance Indicators have moved beyond profitability and efficient production. Organizational stakeholders, including shareholders, now hold leadership accountable for maintaining and improving their Social License to Operate.
It is against this backdrop that organizations find themselves in need of effective systems to enable them to manage core social issues across their value chain.
The IsoMetrix Social Sustainability Solution assists organizations in managing their social environment and driving operational performance improvement, effectively reducing risk and cost.
The software combines the various social sustainability processes in a dynamic, flexible and systemic way, thereby providing a single, comprehensive, integrated management solution.
IsoMetrix has a number of modules and processes dedicated to planning. This allows users to develop strategies around their actions before engaging.
The first step in the planning process is to identify and register all the policies and procedures relevant to the organization. All documentation within the company can be stored within a single accessible platform.
Next, the organization needs to identify their impacts. Social Impacts are any change to the social environment, whether adverse or beneficial, wholly or partly resulting from the organization’s aspects.
The Baseline Assessment module helps organizations to understand the communities that are affected and impacted by their activities. The baseline assessments are also the starting point for any resettlement or livelihood restoration activity as they will be used to monitor and measure the progress against.
The last step in the planning process is the Obligations and Commitments Register. This module ensures the impacts of the organization on the social environment are addressed. It provides a platform for the registration, management and monitoring of planned obligations and commitments.
Stakeholder engagement, reimagined
At the heart of the IsoMetrix Social Sustainability Solution are the Stakeholder Register and Engagement Modules. All stakeholders and stakeholder entities across the companies’ value chain who are affected and impacted by the organization are captured in the Stakeholder Register and can be assessed and mapped according to the organizations proprietary demographics, relationships and interests.
Any interaction is captured, together with the outcome, which enables the organization to prioritize stakeholders, establish a strategy around their engagements, identify emerging issues, shape their responses, and continue to drive performance improvements.
The Meeting Manager is used for all internal and external meetings. The module manages scheduling, attendance, agendas and ensuing actions which may arise from the meetings.
IsoMetrix follows a process-driven approach to the grievance resolution mechanism. Here the user can receive, assign, investigate, resolve and close-out.
IsoMetrix follows the IFC standards in terms of the land access, resettlement and compensation processes with the aim of providing the organization with access to land quickly, within budget and with improved community relations.
The first step is to identify affected land parcels where all the land is registered for the project site.
Next, there is the process of identifying affected landowners and users: The Project Affected Persons Module captures the stakeholders within every land portion.
We then Identify affected assets and current livelihoods. All asset types and their associated rates tables are registered. Multiple rate tables can be created, dealing with government rates and project rates for example. In the main module, we identify the stakeholder’s assets and land use activities which are linked to each land portion.
Lastly, we compensate damages and restore livelihoods. Initiatives are planned based on the Asset Register, Livelihood and Socio-Economic Assessments. The module contains compensation details for each asset by compensation initiative as well as any payment details that have been made to the relevant stakeholder.
The purpose of the Socio-Economic Solution is to manage the redistribution of socio-economic benefits to three types of impacted stakeholders: local communities, local workforce or job seekers and local businesses, typically SMEs.
The Socio-Economic Development Solution enables organizations to plan, design, implement and monitor all development programs and projects with the aim of sharing the organization’s benefits and building a sustainable business for the future.
Benefits for local communities are usually linked to those communities directly impacted by the operation. Organizations are responsible for developing community stakeholders to either work for the organization or to work within the local economy. They can be defined as poverty eradication, community upliftment and infrastructure development.
The development of the local workforce is where organizations need to prove that they are utilizing and expanding the existing employee skills base, specifically for employees that are from the host communities.
The development of local suppliers, manages programs and projects promoting more business between the organization and local businesses in a sustainable manner.
Corporate Social Investment programs are aimed at enhancing the reputational capital of the organization. They are typically categorized as either sponsorships or donations.
Source information required for these processes often stems from other applications like the organization's financial system. IsoMetrix has standard integration objects based on the underlying SQL database technology and information can be transferred between applications via web services, intermediary databases and staging tables or even XML and flat file formats.
The IsoMetrix solution assists organizations in monitoring their social impacts and evaluating their social initiatives.
The Action Manager is at the heart of any IsoMetrix system and is also a central function so can be attached as a sub-process to any other module. Actions are assigned to users in the system, ensuring the pro-active close-out of all tasks and processes. Actions manage the process by which employees are held accountable for their responsible tasks.
The mix of BI strategies gives users a strong combination of self-service tabular reports, fixed format operational reports, guided enterprise analytics and self-service data visualization covering every conceivable reporting and dashboard requirement. The Business Intelligence tools give leadership and management key insights into the social environment affecting the organization and enables them to drill down to the lowest level of granular detail.[RS1]
The Key Performance Indicators or KPIs report on the organization’s performance. The aim of the process in IsoMetrix is to measure and monitor the social outcomes stemming from developmental programs and projects. This is done by defining the organization’s strategic objectives, and then assigning Key Performance Indicators. The KPI’s can then be linked to any process or activity in any module in the system and the actual outcome against the KPI’s is monitored in the dashboards.
IsoMetrix can run on any modern internet browser regardless of the device. There are also apps that can run on IOS, Android or Windows for offline functionalities where connectivity is a challenge. The application is multi-language and administrators can elect either to manually translate all field into the language of their choice or the system will automatically translate the fields using Google or Bing translate.
The Integrated GEO special functionality allows the organization to view the impact of their operations on the territory. Through the Business Intelligence, we can represent any coordinate on a Google map which is integrated with the embedded QlikView dashboards. The application is also fully integrated with ArcGIS.
IsoMetrix is built on an agile application framework. Every field on every form can be configured around the customer’s specific requirements.
Let’s take the Obligations and Commitments Register and let’s assume the client requires a formal approval process on this module. By going into the System Manager, which would be restricted from a system security perspective to only those with permission, we can access the module builder. All the IsoMetrix functionality is built using this simple drag and drop process and non-technical administrators can make changes to existing modules or add new modules through this process. As you can see it is easy to add an additional tab to the module and through the predefined controls add the desired fields and functionality.
This allows the software to be molded to your exact requirements, instead of having to modify processes to suit the software. The benefit is around quality-of-fit while delivering real value through a rapid return on investment.
We are at a social inflexion point that presents a tremendous opportunity for those that are passionate about enabling this transformation from profit to prosperity and IsoMetrix is leading this enablement from a technology perspective.
