Large Online Retailer - Customer Story
The Challenge
By 2022 a large online retailer had been working towards the goal of aligning public disclosures to SASB, GRI, and TCFD standards and frameworks for over a year, but was frustrated by the amount of time and effort it took to collect data from across the organization and synthesize it into the right formats.
The retailer’s sustainability team had been using a combination of spreadsheets, email, and shared folders to manage the data, but with nearly 150 sites across three countries, it felt like a never-ending task to produce any kind of disclosure report.
Company goals were lofty, and the sustainability team was feeling pressured. Having made the Forbes list of best employers for the first time in a decade, they wanted to continue the momentum around their ESG reputation, but knew it would require a more organized and efficient means of gathering data and producing reports.
The Evaluation
Although the company had an incumbent EHS software provider with its own ESG offering, the team wanted to examine the market for an ESG platform that would meet both its functional and service-level requirements.
One of the first aspects that stood out with IsoMetrix Lumina was its ability to standardize and automate distribution of digital forms to collect data across the organization. This process meant that any individual or team that needed to provide data on a regular basis would be automatically notified and could fill in the information in the same manner every time.
Being an international company receiving data in a variety of different measurement systems and following guidance for GHG calculations from both the US EPA and GHG Protocol, the online retailer urgently needed a more effective way to reduce complexity. IsoMetrix Lumina was once again able to deliver, with built-in unit conversions and emissions factor libraries that allowed users to input raw data that would be automatically converted to the needed carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e), or other units accordingly.

The Results
The retailer’s sustainability team wanted to take a methodical approach, given its organizational complexity and the challenges it had faced historically. This meant relying upon the IsoMetrix Customer Success team to get started, with frequent check-ins to test the approach against best practices and ensuring that the data at each site was attributed to the right entity in the organization’s reporting hierarchy.
As the implementation neared completion, the business announced a major reorganization that included relocating, closing, and divesting a number of sites. Adapting to this shift would be a massive project for most solutions, but with Lumina, the company was able to make the adjustments relatively quickly while retaining the historical data from its previous reporting hierarchy.
In just two years, the online retailer has seen major growth and development with the Lumina product, including increased integration capabilities such as automated utility data collection and visual materiality assessments. The sustainability team is now looking forward to the next wave of exciting roadmap items that will bring unparalleled depth to its reporting and process management.
