An HSE solution for Lerala Diamond Mine

Kimberley Diamonds Limited is in the process of recommissioning the Lerala Diamond Mine in Botswana that requires HSE management software.

Tight deadlines

The mandate given to IsoMetrix was to meet a tight deadline. “The implementation of the health, safety and environment (HSE) solution will run in tandem with the commissioning of Lerala Mine. Because of this we were given only 28 days to implement the software,” says Steve Simmonds, Executive Head: Business Development at IsoMetrix. “Fortunately, our software has its roots in the mining and commodities industries, and the system was 95% fit for purpose and needed minimal changes.”

To save time, Kimberley Diamonds Limited sent their resources to IsoMetrix’s offices for the blueprint scoping sessions. “We needed to complete the scoping sessions in only three days, rather the usual four or five days,” says Steve. “It’s an excellent example of our ability as a team to deliver beyond our customers’ expectations.”

We had to meet stringent requirements in a short space of time. Our team rose to the challenge, allowing us to give Kimberley Diamonds Limited exactly what they need,” Steve explains.

Flexible solutions

Because the HSE solution required by Kimberley Diamonds Limited was fairly standard, the IsoMetrix template solutions provided a close fit. Steve explains: “Kimberley Diamonds Limited have opted for a preconfigured solution that meets their requirements. While they have started off with HSE, the nature of our software means that they can add more solutions later on if needed.”

Brett Thompson, Chief Technical Officer for Kimberley Diamonds Limited and Project Sponsor for the IsoMetrix project at Lerala, explains: “We looked at a number of different products in the marketplace to meet our statutory and safety management and reporting requirements and selected IsoMetrix as the system of choice. The criteria which swung the pendulum in favour of IsoMetrix were that it was fit for purpose first and foremost, had significant mining industry experience, was able to be deployed rapidly with limited customisation and finally it was the most cost-effective solution we looked at. While we are very much still in the implementation phase, we are very happy with the progress being made to date.”

IsoMetrix is a South African-developed software solution, driving global sustainability. “What was great about this project is that Lerala is owned by an Australian company. It shows us that awareness of our software, and our unique approach to Governance, Risk and Compliance, is growing internationally, and that the software has a good reputation in the mining sector,” explains Steve.

Lerala Mine

Lerala mine is situated in north-east Botswana, 34 km north west of the Martin’s Drift Border Post with South Africa. It has five diamondiferous kimberlite pipes and a processing plant capable of 200 tonnes per hour processing and recovery facility. The diamonds mined at Lerala are gem or near-gem quality, and have a targeted production rate of approximately 350 000 carats per annum. The mine has a 15-year fully permitted mining license covering an area of 22 km².
